In a devastating Air India plane crash that occurred shortly after take-off from Ahmedabad airport on Thursday, a single passenger miraculously survived the disaster. Identified as Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, a 39-year-old British national of Indian origin, he was seated in seat 11A — the only known survivor among 242 people on board.
According to Ahmedabad Police Commissioner Gyanender Singh Malik, Ramesh was the sole confirmed survivor as of Thursday evening. His survival has been described as nothing short of a miracle. Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who visited Ahmedabad after the incident, met Ramesh at the hospital and confirmed his survival to the media.
Speaking from his hospital bed, Ramesh recounted the terrifying moments:
“Just thirty seconds after takeoff, I heard a loud noise… and the plane crashed. I saw bodies around me. I was scared. I got up and ran. Someone helped me into an ambulance.”
Ramesh had been visiting India briefly to see family and was returning to London with his brother, Ajay Kumar Ramesh, who was seated in a different row and is currently unaccounted for. The brothers had recently visited Diu.
Doctors treating him at the hospital said he had multiple injuries but was stable and out of danger. According to a medic, Ramesh might have been thrown from the aircraft before the explosion, which helped him survive.
His cousin in Leicester confirmed Ramesh called shortly after the crash, saying he was safe but deeply worried about his missing brother. A video call was made to his father in which Ramesh reportedly said:
“The plane’s crashed. I don’t know where my brother is. I don’t see any other passengers. I don’t know how I’m alive, how I exited the plane.”
